Commercial trucking is a large business in Bensenville and the metropolitan Chicago area. The Truck Enforcement Unit exists to provide safe passage through Bensenville for all motor vehicle traffic as they share the roads with larger and heavier commercial vehicles.  Any Overweight/Oversize vehicle traveling upon Bensenville roadways must obtain a Village of Bensenville permit prior to such movement. As a reminder, a state issued permit is only valid for state routes which travel through Bensenville (such as IL Route 83 and IL Route 19). Any such violation could result in receiving a citation. The truck enforcement unit is also a proud member of the Illinois Truck Enforcement Association, www.illinoistruckcops.com.

The primary duties of the Truck Enforcement Unit are:

• Enforcement of weight & size violations.
• Issuing permits for overweight and oversize vehicles using Village maintained highways.
• Education of local trucking companies in regards to local and State laws.
• Assisting the Illinois State Police with random roadside portable scale roadblocks.
• Coordination between developers, trucking companies, and the Village with respect to truck routing in and out of commercial jobsites.
• Handling complaints from residents about truck specific problems.
• Checking trucks for safety and driver’s license classification violations.

OVERWEIGHT / OVERSIZE PERMIT INFORMATION

The Village of Bensenville requires permits for trucks that exceed the following weight/sizes, Title 5, Chapter 3, Section 10:

WEIGHT (non-divisible loads only)

• =80,000 lbs gross
• =34,000 lbs tandem axle
• =20,000 lbs single axle
• =Any weights exceeding the Federal Bridge Law formula

SIZE

• =8'6" width
• =13'6" height
• =65' length (truck-trailer)
• =42' length (single vehicle)

=All companies must have a valid general liability/indemnification policy for the truck in accordance with FMCSR on file with the Bensenville Police before the permit will be issued.
